I Dream in Colors

Hi, I'm Nico :)

11/29/06 New computer!

Yup, i made the switch. I’m on a Mac now; a lovely Mac i have to say! Photos to come soon.

Ok, back to get used to the command key…

11/29/06 Hoops and Yoyo have a podcast!

I’m a big fan of Hoops and Yoyo. I went to their website today and saw they now have a blog. Cool! (just turn down your speakers before you go to it, trust me). But what was more cool was the banner under the blog title. “Click here for another yummy podcast”. A podcast? Hoops and Yoyo have a podcast?? NICE!

Hallmark gets it. Hoops and Yoyo are perfect for a podcast, and it’s a great way to promote them. That said, they don’t get it 100%. The blog doesn’t have a feed link, and the podcast only has an iTunes subscribe link (tip: replace itpc://… with http://… and your regular news reader will take it). I think i’ll send them an email about it. Maybe i’ll use my Rogic account; it may make me look like i know what i’m talking about, ahem.

11/27/06 Shortwave radio

The shortwave radio bug bit me again last night, after a bunch of years. I don’t know what it is, but there’s somehting about it that’s haunting. With podcasting you now can easily listen to people from all over the world, but the shortwave radio is something else. You slowly search for some signal, then you find one and carefully tune till the voice gets as clear as possible; it’s amazing that those radio waves are travelling up to thousands of miles to where you are

Last night i looked for this homebrew antenna i used to use for shortwave (ok, it’s just a long piece of wire, but it IS an antenna anyway…), with no luck. I tried with the built in one. Some local stations, the ocasional brazilian transmition, static, more static, and more static. Bo-ring; i can get brazilian transmitions DXing with an AM walkman. I turned it off and went get the antenna from my room’s stereo (it’s broken so i keep it linked to the reciever with a piece of wire) and attached it to the external antenna input. I turned it on, and without any tuning this woman started speaking in french (no, it’s not Lost, hehe). The joy of shortwave was back!

The ghetto antenna didn’t let me listen to much. That won’t stop me from trying again tonight though. Wish me happy tuning!

11/24/06 IE6 blues

Turns out that the standalone IE6 i had installed doesn’t work so well after all. The AlphaImageLoader filter, used to correct png transparencies, doesn’t work on it, and some other sites i tried weren’t rendered correctly (well, as correctly as IE6 can do it…).

I considered unistalling IE6 and getting an IE7 standalone, then read some horror stories about screwing up Windows after uninstalling IE7, then freaked out for a while, then cursed Microsoft and wondered how hard would it be to sue them for mental anguish, then looked around a bit, then freaked some more, and finally found this multiple IE installer. It even fixes the registry thingies for you, and the AlphaImageLoader filter works on it.

Now, i’m wondering… if several people found a way to run multiple IEs at the same time, how come Microsoft can’t provide an official solution?. Hopefully Windows Vista will be a big flop and Linux will take over. As for me, i’m getting a Mac.

11/19/06 The top 10 reasons..

… being a designer is the best damn job in the world.

(got this from the Rookie Designer Podcast forum, and it’s originally from the latest issue of STEP Magazine)

10. Being a whiney, temperamental crybaby is completely excusable.

9. You get to have all the mystique of a fine artist with none of the clean up.

8. “I’m a Designer” sounds great no matter who else is at the table.

7. Throwing clients off by explaining why the EPS on the FTP makes a poor PDF due to lack of PPI.

6. You can rock an all black outfit in the summer that would put the goth kids to shame.

5. You know enough key commands to virtually type an entire layout.

4. The coolest cubicles in the building!

3. In a world chock full of corporate rules you’re bound by none.

2. Given a small budget, a suffocating deadline, and a client generated concept, you channel MacGyver-like skills and get the job done.

1. Creating cool work and having little pieces of your ego printed, published and plastered all over the place!

.

11/19/06 Photojunkie.ca contest

Photojunkie.ca is having a “One Million Giveaway Extravaganza”, celebrating their upcoming one millionth visit to the website. To be elegible, you have to get “ballots”, by linking to the contest post, leaving comments, or writing about it on your own blog.

I’ve been subscribed to Photojunkie for a while now, and i dig Rannie’s work a lot. I’m not saying no to a giveaway!! So let’s see:

  • Comment on the One Million Giveaway Extravaganza post on photojunkie.ca, check. One ballot
  • Link to the previously mentioned Photojunkie’s One Million Giveaway Extravaganza post, check. Two ballots.
  • Writing about the contest on my blog, check. One ballot
  • Commenting on specific prize posts and/or writing and linking to those specific posts, not checked (the prizes haven’t been mentioned yet). But it’ll be one/two ballots.

This will be too cool. Photo-related stuff (because i’m pretty sure the prizes will be photo related stuff – it’s not calledphotojunkie for nothing… ) for free? wohoo! I’m so in.

11/17/06 Hailstorm

Big big BIG hailstorm a couple of days ago. We only suffered minor damages (a couple of small dents on the car and some broken tiles), but there were major damages across the city; broken windows, fallen trees, walls and roofs fell down, 30 people injured and even one dead.

Floyd doesn’t like the rain (no, he wasn’t out during the storm, this was taken afterwards)

Keep in mind the size of those hailstones when you see these videos (click on the images to go to YouTube):
