Two separate people today told me how much they still appreciate the work I did for them a long while ago. :) I love my job. 7 hrs ago

I Dream in Colors

Hi, I'm Nico :)

03/30/07 Tag!

Cat tagged me on the favo(u)rite 7 songs game that has been going around lately, and as much as she hates this stuff I have to play along. I mean, how bad will it look if the Prime Minister of Canada replies and I don’t??

Since it’s impossible to make a list of my 7 favorite songs that won’t change in the next five minutes, I’ll use one of my current favorite playlists:

  1. Counting Crows - American Girls
  2. 20 Minute Loop - Cora May
  3. Brother Lowdown - Dissapearing World
  4. Catupecu Machu - Plan B: Anhelo de Satisfaccion
  5. The Honorary Title - Untouched and Intact
  6. My Teenage Stride - To Live And Die In The Airport Lounge
  7. The Apparitions - Motor Skills

Now I have to pass it on. I can’t do a silly tag game on music without tagging Lola. I don’t know if he hasn’t been taged or he’s not playing along, but I’ll tag Mark too. And finally, Evil Science Chick (she’s not really evil :) ). I would have tagged Rob too but the man doesn’t have a blog (that’s so 1997…)

03/30/07 Humid

It’s been raining (pouring rain!) non stop for 5 days and looks like it’ll last another couple of days. Everything is freaking wet. My clothes are wet, my bed sheets are wet, the floors are wet, the air is wet. The city is wet, several areas are flooded. I can’t wait to see the sun again.

03/22/07 App launcher for mac

Installing yet another app to make it easier to launch the lots of apps I have now kinda defeats the purpose (heh). And if I added everything I regularly use to the dock, I’d need one of those 30 inch monitors. So instead, I did something very simple. I added my apps folder to the dock. Now all i have to do is right click on it and start typing the name of the app I want to quickly locate it.

Quicksilver may be faster, but if all you need is a launcher, and you don’t want to have yet one more thing running, this sounds like a good solution

03/14/07 About me

The “about me” page has been empty since I created the blog. Instead of trying to come up with something to say myself I enabled comments on that page so other people can write in it. If you feel like it, be my guest!

03/14/07 Twitter via WAP

If using twitter via SMS got to be too expensive (or too annoying), you can now check twitter via WAP with Twapper. Using this and SMS only to send twitters, it might actually be usable from my phone!

03/13/07 Ze Frank on creativity

Ze Frank never ceases to amaze me. Man, am I going to miss the show. In case you missed the show from March 12th, Ze is in Austin for SXSW and he has a great insight on the conference and the concept of creativity:

The streets are teaming with people, and the mechanics of their daily lifes that have brought them here are vastly different. Some have sweated their way here in small rock clubs in Wisconsin, others have spent barefoot nigths in an editing room eating doritos, and some have been cradling a laptop like a baby, for years. Despite these large differences in the day to day there is some sort of an implied unity here, and that unity seems to be found in that word, creativity.

I’m interested in this flip from zero to one, this confidence to start things, because I look at creative projects like they were sudoku puzzles. You can stare at them as long as you like but you won’t suddenly see all the numbers. You have to start, you have to find one box to fill in, and from that, another one will reveal itself. You may not be able to solve all of them, but as long as you know it’s possible, you’ll keep trying. And no matter how many you solve, each new one begins with a bunch of empty spaces. Zero to one.

03/11/07 Buggy WP 2.1 tags

wp_list_bookmarks is a new tag in Wordpress 2.1 that replaces the tags get_links_list and get_links tags, and is the one that’s giving me the more trouble. The documentation page is still a “rough draft”, and the tag itself is bugged (there are a few bug reports filed already).

One thing that I couldn’t do to save my life is display the links list without a title. You used to have to use the parameter ‘title_li=’, wich is supposed to still work. Anyone who has tried will tell you that it doesn’t work so well.Took me a while, but after some searching I found a workaround for it. If you pass the ‘title_li=’ parameter alone, it won’t work. You also have to add ‘categorize=0′

Now, by doing this you’re passing a false value to this parameter, whose description is”Bookmarks should be shown within their assigned Categories”. I think that using a value of 1 should work too if that’s what’s needed, but I haven’t tried that yet.

03/08/07 Cool links

I added a “Cool links” section on the sidebar. It says “weekly” but I plan to update it every time I get a new cool link (may be once a week, may be more). I also plan to do something with the header and some image. But that’s after I get some work done, of course…

03/07/07 Network2 hamsters ringtone!

Jay Moonah created an awesome entry for the Network2.tv How to Watch Internet TV contest. Everyone demanded a ringtone, so Chris Penn from the Financial Aid Podcast made one. Here it is in action!

03/06/07 Podcasts on iTunes

Being Apple a company that pays so much attention to user interface, it sometimes amazes me how poor is the iPod/iTunes suite at podcast management. iTunes can only mark a podcast listened or unlistened. With this, you can tell iTunes to sync all your podcasts or only the unlistened ones, and to keep all the shows, the last X shows, all the unlistened shows(*), or the last X unlistened shows.

But half of the shows on my to-listen list (wich right now is up to 50) are half an hour or more. Most of these shows I often pause and resume listening later. With the options iTunes gives me, I have to choose between keeping every single show or loosing the half played ones when I sync the iPod (the “last X shows” options are useless to me, since you have to apply the same selection to all your subscriptions).

The abbility to mark a podcast as unplayed from the iPod would be very helpful. But what would really solve much of these problems is a very simple thing. A “half played” status. If you often pause shows and resume them later, you could set iTunes to “sync all unplayed and half-played shows”, this way you’d keep those podcasts you want to finish listening even after you sync the iPod. And if you want your podcasts deleted even if you only half-listened to them, you could tell iTunes to only sync the fully unplayed shows.

This is not difficult to implement. How does one have to do to make a suggestion to the Apple people? Is anyone interested in starting a site with new feature requests for iTunes/iPod? I know I’m not the only one wishing for extremely reasonable iTunes features. Maybe this way we’d be getting useful upgrades, and not just full-screen coverflow…

(*): well, in theory. In reality, iTunes keeps old podcasts even when set to “delete all played” and “allow auto delete”. Drives me nuts! Anyone knows what may be the problem?
